I had to be careful approaching the material for ‘All That Heaven Allows.’ My editor and I decided early on that the rule of thumb was we could go juicy but not salacious. “When you’re researching someone like Rock Hudson you tend to hear a lot of wild stories, like all-male parties would have taken place at that house he may have owned at one point in Bermuda Dunes. In the 1950s, Hudson went on studio-arranged photo shoots in the desert, often with his lesbian wife of three years, Phyllis Gates, whose marriage was arranged by Hudson’s agent, Henry Wilson, who also represented other handsome male stars who owned property in the desert, including Rory Calhoun, Guy Madison and Tab Hunter. Griffin said Miller told him shortly before his death that Hudson liked to come to the desert “to escape the glare of the Hollywood bright lights for a while." It was well known that Hudson visited his longtime friends, actor George Nader and his partner, Mark Miller, who became Hudson's personal manager, at their home in Bermuda Dunes six months before his death at age 59 in October 1985.

Mark Griffin, who has written an “All That Heaven Allows” biography of Hudson, says Hudson’s connection to the desert is as translucent as the episode of "In Palm Springs." Griffin is having two book signings in the desert this weekend, following the screening of a promotional documentary Friday as part of Modernism Week.
